THE BEGINNING OF THE FORMAL LEARNING ADVENTURE

Your child will bring to the classroom a natural wonder and curiosity about the world and their place within it.

A welcome from Chelsea Formosa

HEAD OF LOWER PRIMARY

The Lower Years of Primary School at Carmichael College mark the thrilling start of an incredible journey—where curiosity is sparked, friendships are formed, and a lifelong love of learning begins to grow, founded in a Gospel centred and Graced filled community. Whether you join our community at the beginning of Prep or at another Year level, we believe you enter a partnership with us—one that will support your child to flourish and thrive.

At Carmichael College, we are committed in fostering lifelong learning qualities in our students from Prep and believe in preparing students to thrive in an ever-changing world. In addition to attaining academic skills, we also focus and prepare students to develop soft skills that will support them into Secondary school, within their future professions and in their personal and social lives. They learn to make decisions, solve problems, think critically, and work collaboratively, all while developing a strong sense of identity rooted in God’s unconditional grace. The early years of a child’s education lay the essential groundwork for lifelong learning and the development of important life skills. During this formative stage, our teachers actively assess, monitor, and support each child’s individual learning journey.

From Prep through to Year One and Year Two, students start to discover what it means to be effective communicators and compassionate, resourceful, and productive global citizens. We aim to bring out the best in our students, through modelling a growth mindset and appreciating each other is created by God, who has skills and gifts, and encouraging everyone to let their light shine. Beyond the classroom, our youngest learners begin to find their place in a vibrant, caring community of children and adults united by the love of Christ. Our staff regularly uphold their students in prayer, walking alongside them throughout the year as they learn, grow, and flourish.

The early years of a child’s education provide a critical foundation for lifelong learning and the acquisition of life skills. During these formative years our teachers assess, monitor and respond to each child’s learning. Our partnership with parents is fundamental to the development of our students. Classroom teachers regularly pray for their students as they journey with them through a year of learning.

LITERACY

For our youngest learners, becoming skilled in English and literacy isn’t just about reading and writing – it’s about giving them the tools to understand their world, express their ideas, and connect with others. Our main goal is to help them grow into confident communicators, creative and critical thinkers, and informed citizens. At Carmichael, our approach to reading is built on the Science of Reading. This comprehensive, evidence-based approach combines decades of research from fields like neuroscience, psychology, and linguistics.

NUMERACY

At Carmichael, our teaching of lower primary mathematics focuses on building deep understandings through these four proficiencies, or skills, as outlined in the Australian Curriculum,

  • Understanding: We help students understand mathematical concepts by making them tangible.
  • Fluency: We build fluency by providing consistent practice with fundamental skills.
  • Problem-Solving: We encourage problem-solving by presenting real-life challenges. We teach students to identify what a problem is asking, plan how to solve it, and then check their answer to see if it makes sense.
  • Reasoning: We develop reasoning by asking students to explain their thinking. We encourage them to describe how they got an answer and why their method works.

By focusing on Maths skills, we are helping students become independent and confident learners.

“I have been at Carmichael College since Prep.  The older kids are nice to the younger kids and I sometimes play with my older brother and his friends. I also like that we get to learn about God because he’s our Father and he made us.”
